Tollywood had three major releases during Christmas – Sandip Ray's Hatyapuri, Nandita Roy-Shiboprasad Mukherjee’s Haami 2, and Avijit Sen’s Projapati. Surprisingly, all these films overtook the Bollywood mega release – Cirkus – in Bengal. While Rohit Shetty’s film fails to impress, the Feluda-film, Dev-Mithun Chakraborty’s family drama, and the return of Laltu and Mitalin (Shiboprosad and Gargee RoyChowdhury) have been recording houseful numbers all over the state.
All three Bengali films are family films with Haami 2 and Hatyapuri having a strong TG of children. Haami, the 2018-film that is directed by Sibaprasad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy, was a super hit. And Feluda is a traditional favourite among the audience. Indraneil Sengupta has successfully impressed the audience as the new Feluda. On the other hand, the chemistry between Dev and Mithun is being lapped up by the audience and as a result, Projapati is heading towards a major hit.
Satadeep Saha, film distributor and the owner of Ajanta, said, “This Christmas broke the conventional notion that if you release multiple films together, the business will be affected. I have never seen such a brilliant opening for all three films together. Projapati is heading towards a blockbuster hit. Haami 2 and Hatyapuri are doing very well too. Meanwhile, Cirkus is not faring as expected.”
All three Bengali films are running in Priya Cinema. Hatyapuri hosted its premiere at the theatre. The owner Arijit Dutta said, “All three are running pretty well. I can not remember when was the last time three Bengali films did so well simultaneously. Perhaps some families are watching one film a week and giving the other two a miss. However, there is a chance that they may come back and watch the other two later.”
As of now, Projapati is running phenomenally in theatres. Haami 2 is also running fine. For years, Sandip Ray’s Feluda used to get released during Christmas. There was a break for a few years. Now, with Indraneil Sengupta as the new Feluda and Abhijit Guha as Jatayu, Hatyapuri brings Feluda back with a bang during the Holiday season.
