Back in 2023, when the buzz was that Amazon Prime Video was all set to launch the second most expensive show in streaming history, audiences were eagerly waiting, ready to dive in. The excitement was heightened as the show was created by The Russo Brothers, fresh off their Avengers: Endgame success. So, when Citadel, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, premiered on Amazon Prime Video, everyone was curious to see what was in store. However, it turned out that not everyone was happy with what they got.
Despite mixed reactions, Citadel was renewed for Season 2, and the team even wrapped up filming last year. However, in a new and unexpected development, the studio has now delayed the show's release and has halted commissioning new spinoffs and prequels indefinitely.
For the unversed, Citadel, created by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, follows two spies from a dismantled spy agency who must navigate life without their former organization watching over them. The original plan was to expand the franchise globally, with each country having its own localized spin-off, such as Citadel: Diana (Italy) and Citadel: Honey Bunny (India), which would ultimately connect to the main English-language series.
However, the studio has now decided to push the release of Citadel Season 2 from its original 2025 debut to 2026, and the reason is quite concerning.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon and MGM executives were reportedly not pleased with what they have seen of Citadel Season 2 so far. This led to the decision to delay the show's originally planned fall 2025 release to spring 2026. Not only that, but the execs have also put all planned spin-offs and prequels on hold indefinitely, at least until the second season is released. As of now, the company has not set a new official release date for the series.
The official synopsis for Citadel reads: "With Citadel's fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. For eight years, they have remained hidden, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts."
"Until one night, Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies set off on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore—all while contending with the dangerous secrets of their pasts."
