After a long wait, Yash Raj Films (YRF) unveiled the official trailer of Akshay Kumar's historical drama Prithviraj in Mumbai today.

The historical figure's story has made it to screen several times before, and this is the latest one chronicling his bravery and fame. The trailer opens with a tense battle scene and a voiceover explaining that a throne's successor is selected not because of his lineage but for his valour. While the voiceover relays this, we are taken to Prithviraj's coronation.

The clip also introduces Manushi Chillar as Sanyogita, Prithviraj's consort and gives a glimpse into their fairytale romance that forms an important part of the king's biography. Sanjay Dutt plays Kaka Kanha, while Sonu Sood is Chand Varai, Prithviraj's right-hand man.

Now ruling over Delhi and its neighbouring territories was no easy task and there were constant threats of raiders, which for Prithviraj comes in the form of Sultan Mohammad Ghori (Manav Vij).

The trailer for Prithviraj promises everything that a larger-than-life historical drama should have including stunning visuals, actions, bombastic dialogues, a love story and an impressive cast.

Akshay was teary-eyed at the trailer launch event, where he said his mother would have been proud to see him play Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan if she were alive. The actor's mother Aruna Bhatia passed away on September 8 last year due to health-related issues. Calling Prithviraj "educational", he also urged that the movie be shown to students as part of Indian history.

Akshay has played real-life figures before in Pad Man, Airlift and Kesari. This movie is Akshay's fourth collaboration with YRF after Yeh Dillagi (1994), a cameo in Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1994), and Tashan (2008). Prithviraj is among the studio's upcoming star-studded projects like Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Pathaan

The movie is written and directed by Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are the composers of the movie's soundtrack, while Varun Grover is the lyricist. Ashutosh Rana and Sakshi Tanwar are also part of the cast.

Prithviraj releases in cinemas on June 3.
