Director Dijo Jose Antony’s Jana Gana Mana is already among the highest grossers in Malayalam this year. And now the team is gearing up for its OTT release on June 2 on Netflix, with its lead actor Prithviraj Sukumaran himself saying that the movie will be relatable for audience across India.
In a Twitter Spaces session hosted by Netflix South ahead of the film’s OTT drop, Prithviraj talked about the reasons to watch the movie, which will be released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, as well as how movies with such socio-political content must be handled.
Talking about the movie, Prithviraj said, “Jana Gana Mana is a film that speaks on how social conscience is being influenced in today’s times. It’s not about politics; it’s not about a political party or a political propaganda. It's about how our collective conscience is being influenced by factors that are beyond our control; how narratives are being created that can influence us on a societal level. And that’s a serious issue that needs to be addressed.”
The actor, who is currently shooting for Blessy’s Aadujeevitham in Jordan, also explained that he believes that when making films on subjects like these, the film “needs to be objective” and that the content needs to be said in “a populist vocabulary”.
The film, which hit theatres on April 28, went on to make over Rs 50 cr in box office earnings worldwide. Jana Gana Mana also stars Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mamta Mohandas and Shari in pivotal roles.
Prithviraj plays a former IPS officer turned lawyer in the film. “The character Aravind Swaminathan from Jana Gana Mana is one of my personal favourites. In fact, a lot of people have told me that it’s one of my best,” said the actor, who has also co-produced the film.
