Mamitha Baiju, who has captured the hearts of Malayalis with her portrayals of Anju in Kho Kho and Sona Thomas in Super Sharanya, is occupied with the promotion of her upcoming romantic comedy Premalu. In this Hyderabad-set movie, she portrays a vivacious young lady named Reenu.
The Operation Java actress, who took home the Kerala Film Critics' Best Supporting Actress prize for Kho Kho, is generally excited but a little nervous about the reaction that the public will give Premalu. Mamitha discusses her excitement for Premalu's theatrical debut as well as her other 2024 releases in an interview with OTTplay.
How would you describe Reenu in Premalu?
Another character in my career that I will genuinely treasure is Reenu. She is a young lady who has practical judgement but also has some emotional attachments. She also possesses a decent sense of humour. I am eager to find out how the audience will react to Reenu on February 9.
Were you always passionate about acting?
Since I was a young child, films have shaped me, and I adore them. The majority of the films that I have seen have left me with profound memories. In addition to just being a viewer, I really like the storytelling style and like to empathise with some of the characters in the movie. Some films, for example, gave me a hangover that lasted for more than a week.
At the time, I was not sure if I could act or work in the film industry. The movie Sarvopari Palakkaran was my first. I appeared in a few films in small roles, such as Varathan, Honey Bee 2, and Vikruthi. I was not certain for sure that this was my passion and that I wanted to make a career out of it until I had completed ten films.
Since my father is a doctor, many people in my family expected me to start taking medicine after Class 12. I continued to pursue my education while also holding onto my love of acting. I also love to dance, which helped me get into movies.
Colour Padam became a big hit and received positive feedback from netizens. In what ways did the short film represent a new chapter in your career?
I was offered Colour Padam following Operation Java and Kho Kho. Many people who had not seen any of my films saw this short film and were pleased with my performance, which was another turning point in my career.
Super Sharanya was the role for which you received the most praise. What changes did Sona Thomas make to your career?
In general, I am a very introverted and timid person. Because I am shy, I was even hesitant to do interviews. Sona entered my life and completely transformed it.
Thanks to Sona, I realised I could also handle spontaneous humour. Every movie we do causes us to grow as artistes, and Super Sharanya's character and its cast really helped me do that. Because of Sona, I began to enjoy our friendship, have more fun times, and feel a little more at ease.
What was it like to collaborate with Girish A D once more?
It felt like returning to another family. I felt very at ease and thrilled to be working with them once more. I did not find the cast or crew to be unfamiliar either. Being on the set was simple for me because I know Girish's working style and he understands mine. I had a great time filming for Premalu.
What are your upcoming projects?
Alongside G V Prakash, I am making my Tamil debut with Rebel. I had a great time filming this movie, playing a Malayali girl in it. The film will hit the big screen soon.
Additionally, I have committed to another Tamil film, the second schedule of which will start next week. Two Malayalam projects are being discussed; however, I am unable to provide many details at this time as the producers have not yet made any official announcements.
