Praavinkoodu Shappu: Basil Joseph reveals the cult classic cop character he took inspiration from for his latest crime thriller

Director and actor Basil Joesph, who appeared in the critically acclaimed Sookshmadarshini last year, opened his account for 2025 with the Malayalam film Praavinkoodu Shappu, which also has been receiving good reviews upon its release.

Basil, who stars in the lead role, and plays the role of a cop, recently opened up about taking the reference of a particular iconic police character for his role. Keep reading to know which cult film is Basil Joseph talking about.

Basil Joesph reveals taking inspiration from Singam character for Praavinkoodu Shappu

Basil Joesph, actor and director, has amazed us in many roles. After the success of Sookshmadarshini co-starring Nazriya Fahadh, Basil is once again back with Praavinkoodu Shappu, a Malayalam film that hit theatres this week.

For those who have not watched the film, Basil plays the role of a sub-inspector who is at the helm of solving a murder case. While interacting at a media event for the film, Basil said he took the reference of the popular cop franchise Singam as a reference for his role. “I got cleared it from the director, but I had only two weeks to get into shape and had hit the gym. I was sure that when I get out of the police jeep, for now it would be this music (hums), but it should be the Singam theme music. But when I had only two weeks, my gym instructor said it still would not be the Singam music,” Basil said.

Praavinkoodu Shappu is directed by Sreeraj Sreenivasan and stars Soubin Shahir, Basil Joseph, and Chemban Vinod Jose, with Chandini Sreedharan, Shivajith, and others.

Where to watch Singam franchise on OTT?

The Singam franchise consists of three parts. With Suriya playing the role of cop Durai Singam, director Hari’s franchise is an action drama, which revolves around the titular cop standing against corrupt forces. The Singam franchise is available for streaming on SunNXT and OTTplay Premium.
