Director Janardhan Chikkanna’s Powder, better known as the first collaborative venture of KRG Studios and The Viral Fever, had struck a streaming deal, even though its theatrical outing was far from stellar. OTTplay had earlier reported that the film would begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video, although, at the time, a digital release date was not available. Turns out, the streamer is set to make the film available from October 4.

When it was first announced, Powder had excited film buffs, given the quality of content that both the production houses had churned out in the past. Their union had to be quite the banger. The film, though, was far from that, with the comedy, which was meant to be its strong-point, being its biggest undoing.

Based on a story by Deepak Venkateshan, which Janardhan then polished to present as Powder, the film had Diganth, Dhanya Ramkumar, Anirudh Acharya, Sharmiela Mandre, Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Rangayana Raghu, Ravishankar Gowda, Bharath GB, among others on its cast. Diganth and Dhanya played a former couple, who are thrown into a strange situation together, when he comes across a consignment of drugs packaged in talcum powder boxes at the supermarket he works at.

Diganth, Anirudh and Dhanya then cook up a plan to sell the goods to the highest bidder among the local dealers, even as the ‘rightful owners’ are hot on their trail. Who will have the last laugh? That is what Powder is all about.

The film’s theatrical outing was nothing to write home about, but given KRG Studios’ ongoing relationship with the streamer, Powder managed to find a spot. It now remains to be seen if the two banners will go ahead with their other planned collaborations for films across all four south languages. KRG also has an ongoing commitment with Friday Film Factory to make and distribute Malayalam films. The first one, Padakkalam, is in the works. The banner’s next Kannada film is Uttarakaanda, a two-part gangster flick.
