Por Thozhil has become the biggest dark horse of Tamil cinema this year. The movie was released without much fanfare in cinemas in June and became an instant hit, creating a lot of anticipation for its OTT release . Starring R. Sarathkumar and Ashok Selvan in the lead roles, the movie is helmed by first-time director Vignesh Raja.
The success of Por Thozhil was so big that it prompted the filmmakers to delay its digital premiere to fully capitalise on the movie's potential at the box office. The police procedural that revolves around a serial killer case ran in theatres worldwide for over 50 days, making it a "mega-blockbuster." In addition to its commercial success, the movie also received a lot of love from critics.
"Vignesh Raja has a strong grasp of what he wants to convey through Por Thozhil. While the main focus of the movie is the police investigation into serial murders, it also delves into the deeper theme of societal awareness regarding mental health," wrote OTTplay's film critic Manoj Kumar R in his review .
Por Thozhil is also a buddy-cop movie. At the heart of the story is a budding professional rapport between Lokanathan (Sarath Kumar) and Prakash (Ashok Selvan). While Lokanathan is a seasoned police officer, he's not a people person. He keeps everyone at arm's length with his grumpiness and his blatant disregard for politeness and small talk. On the other hand, Prakash is a gentle, humble and very social person. While Lokanathan is hardened by real-life experiences, Prakash is a bookworm. The movie also examines the importance of parenting and its role in shaping the society.
Besides Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan, the movie also stars Nikhila Vimal, Nizhalgal Ravi, Sarath Babu and P. L. Thenappan among others
Por Thozhil is now all set to become available for streaming on SonyLIV starting August 11 .
