Trisha has been the talk of the town ever since she released her character poster from Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: I today. The actress, who plays the powerful Chola princess Kundavai, shared her look in the film, and wrote, "In a world of men, a woman of courage. Presenting Princess Kundavai! #PS1 releasing in theatres on 30th September in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada! ๐ก๏ธ@madrastalkies_ @LycaProductions #ManiRatnam @arrahman (sic)."
Soon after Trisha shared her look in the film, Karthi, who plays Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan, a commander of the Chola army, who later goes on to marry Kundavai, sent out a funny tweet in which he wrote, "Princess ๐๐๐. Please share your location. Need to drop off your brother's palm leaf manuscript (sic)โ. To which Trisha, too, put up a quirky tweet. "Sorry smart phones and smart people not allowed in the palace (sic)." This fun banter has won the hearts of audience.

According to the novel penned by Kalki's Krishnamoorthy's 1955, Kundavai is the younger sister of Aditya Karikalan and the elder sister of Arulmozhi Varman. While Vikram plays Aditya Karikalan in the film, Jayam Ravi plays Arulmozhi Varman. Kundavai is married to Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan.
The film is jointly bankrolled by by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. AR Rahman has composed music. Cinematography is by Ravi Varman and editing is handled by Sreekar Prasad. Ponniyin Selvan-I will have a worldwide release on September 30.
