Mani Ratnam's dream project Ponniyin Selvan: I is gearing up to hit screens on September 30 and the excitement among fans is palpable. The magnum opus is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's epic novel of the same name. Ponniyin Selvan has an ensemble star cast, which includes Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vikram Prabhu, Sarathkumar, Rahman and Jayaram to name a few.
Jayaram, who plays Azhwarkadiyan Nambi, a spy and close friend of Vanthiyathevan, shared a picture from the set of the film and stated that he had waited years to work in a Mani Ratnam film and that the wait has come to an end with Ponniyin Selvan. Jayaram is seen with the film's director Mani Ratnam and cinematographer Ravi Varman in the film. Calling the character something that is close to his heart, Jayaram wrote, "Years of wait to act in a #maniratnam film finally comes to an end ! To be a part of this magnum opus #ponniyinselvan feels amazing #nambi will be close to my heart. @r_varman_ it feels great to see your growth right from your first film with me ! You are exceptional. Catch you guys soon in theaters!" (sic)
The plot revolves around the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. The teaser of Ponniyin Selvan, which was released recently has already received more than 20 million views. Music for the film is by AR Rahman and editing is by Sreekar Prasad. Thota Tharrani has handled the art direction. Though Ponniyin Selvan was originally supposed to be a standalone film, it was later split into two parts out of which the first one will release in September. The film will release worldwide in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. Ponniyin Selvan is jointly bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
