Recently a video, which was originally posted by British-Indian influencer Zara Patel, was morphed and Zara's face was edited to popular actress Rashmika Mandanna's using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. This video went viral on social media following which Rashmika expressed her displeasure on the matter. To add fuel to the debate, Delhi Police even registered a case in connection with the deepfake AI-generated video of Rashmika Mandanna. While the investigation in the case continues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has something to say on the pressing issue.
PM Modi says deepfake videos are a ‘big concern’
According to the news agency PTI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this noon virtually addressed the Voice of Global South Summit wherein he spoke in depth about the use of artificial intelligence for creating 'deepfakes' and termed it as “problematic”. He even urged the media persons to educate people about the serious matter.
“Deepfake a big concern, asked ChatGPT team to give deepfake warning in content," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the event.
The Prime Minister further emphasized that India believes that new technology should not widen the gap between the Global North and the Global South. “During the times of Artificial Intelligence, it is important that technology should be used responsibly. To further promote this, next month, India will organize the ArtificiaI Global Partnership Summit," he said.
Rashmika Mandanna case: The latest update
According to news agency PTI, the Delhi Police has questioned a 19-year-old youth from Bihar in connection with a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna that was widely circulated on social media recently.
The police are almost convinced that the accused had first uploaded the video on his social media platform and later shared it widely on other platforms.
Famous celebrities namely Kajol, Katrina Kaif, Shubman Gill, Sara Tendulkar, Rashmika Mandanna and many others are also victims of the deepfake video trend. A police investigation is underway.
