Real Star Upendra has a separate fan following for his unique style of storytelling and filmmaking. With each of his films, he’s presented his ideologies and philosophies in exaggerated or even eccentric fashion, yet ensured that they’ve all been thought provoking. The actor-filmmaker returns to the director’s chair after almost a decade with UI, which is set to release in theatres on December 20.

Tharle Nan Maga

Upendra made his directorial debut with Tharle Nan Maga, starring Navarasa Nayaka Jaggesh in the lead. The film revolves around a couple who want their son to marry from a rich family. But when he instead marries from a poor household, he sets out to change his parents’ outlook. The film also stars Bank Janardhan and Satyabhama.

This horror thriller introduced Kumar Govind as a mainstream hero. A big-time box office hit, the film is best known for creating a new trend in the thriller genre in Kannada cinema. The film revolves around the supernatural events that occur at a mansion rented by a film crew. Besides Kumar Govind, the film also has Kashinath, Suresh Heblikar, Biradar, Bank Janardhan, Suma, etc., on the cast.

Credited for ushering in the gangster movie genre in Kannada cinema, Om is widely considered a cult classic and among the best films made in the industry ever. Starring Shivarajkumar in the lead, the film follows how his character, the son of a priest, gets dragged into a world of crime and violence. A A home production for Shivarajkumar, Om’s cast also included several real-life gangsters, including Bekkina Kannu Rajendra, Tanveer, Korangu Krishna and Jedaralli Krishnappa.

Upendra made his acting debut as leading man with A, a romantic psychological thriller that revolves around the love story between a director and a heroine. Upendra was paired with Chandini in the film, which also explored the casting couch issue in the film industry.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is what Upendra plays on in the psychological drama that explores human emotions through the protagonist’s relationships with three women in his life. A cult hit, the film brought Raveena Tandon to Kannada cinema.

Upendra’s first film set in the future, Super’s story takes place in 2030 and has him as an NRI, intent on cleaning up the country’s political system. Nayanthara was paired with Upendra in the film.
