A terror-inducing, full-fledged horror movie like Pizza 3: The Mummy has been long overdue in Tamil cinema.

The popular consensus is that the latest Tamil movie Pizza 3: The Mummy didn't get its due at the box office. Directed by Mohan Govind, it's the latest addition to the Pizza movie series that began over a decade ago.
Starring Ashwin Kakumanu and Pavithrah Marimuthu in the lead roles, Pizza 3: The Mummy opened in cinemas at the end of July to positive reviews. However, the movie failed to take off at the box office. One of the reasons could be the movie was released along with a bunch of other small-budget movies, including the horror-comedy DD Returns and romantic comedy LGM. Maybe the audiences preferred lighter-themed movies to an emotionally-heavy horror show.

A long overdue
A terror-inducing, full-fledged horror movie has been long overdue in Tamil cinema, with mixing humour with terror has become a prevalent practice among Tamil mainstream filmmakers. However, the Pizza series has continued the tradition of staying true to the horror genre.
It's noteworthy that the first movie in the series, simply titled Pizza, was released in 2012. It was a small-budget movie as much of the movie plays out within the confines of a urban duplex. It was a smash hit at the box office and proved once again that a big budget was not imperative to making good movies. It also put filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj and actor Vijay Sethupathi on the map. And the rest, as they say, is history.
The second film in the series was Pizza II: Villa (2013), which was written and directed by Deepan Chakravarthy.
A gripping trailer
Judging from the trailer, however, Pizza 3: The Mummy appears to be darker and has doubled down on horror elements in comparison to its predecessors. The movie tells the story of a chef who begins to experience several paranormal activities within his kitchen. And soon things get bumped with a series of deaths and the chef's efforts to uncover a terrifying truth.
Pizza 3: The Mummy will become available for streaming on Simply South and Amazon Prime Video starting August 24.
