Vijay Antony surprised one and all when he announced the decision to don the director's hat for Pichaikkaran 2. The movie was supposed to be helmed by Priya Krishnaswamy of Baaram fame, but the former took up the project after they had creative differences.
However, there wasn't any news about the film for a while except for a promo video released by the team. Vijay has now come up with a surprise which has left movie buffs elated. He has announced that the movie will release in theatres during summer 2023.
The film's digital rights have been bagged by Disney+ Hotstar. An update on the movie's exact release date is likely to happen soon. Pichaikkaran 2 will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam in different titles. Pichaikkaran, directed by Sasi, was released in 2016.
The movie became a sleeper hit at the box office and its Telugu version, Bichagadu, surprised the trade with its collections. The film's story and screenplay, complemented by Vijay's performance, attracted viewers in large numbers in Tamil and Telugu. He had announced a while ago that the sequel will be bigger in terms of scale. The Kannada and Malayalam versions have been titled Bhikshuka 2 and Bhikshakkaran 2 respectively.
Pichaikkaran 2 will have him donning multiple roles. The promo video which was unveiled some time ago had left the audience guessing for its plot. He himself has bankrolled the project apart from composing music for it.
His last outing was Kodiyil Oruvan which hit the screens in October 2021. His long-delayed movie Tamilarasan is his next release. The action drama has been slated for a release on December 30. This will be followed by Kolai, a mystery thriller, which is expected to be out before Pichaikkaran 2.
