Netflix's The Crown is a historical drama series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, created and principally written by Peter Morgan and produced by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television. It shows the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, until the early 21st century. The first season depicts events up to 1955, with Winston Churchill resigning as prime minister and the Queen's sister Princess Margaret deciding not to marry Peter Townsend.

About the 5th Season

After the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the makers made the premiere of The Crown’s 6th and final season on November 12. The 5th season was released in 2022, which shows Elizabeth's annus horribilis in 1992, Diana's Panorama interview, the separation and divorce of Prince Charles and Diana, Elizabeth's state visit to Russia, use of Prince Philip's DNA to identify the remains of the Romanov family, the decommissioning of Britannia, the handover of Hong Kong, and Major's departure from office and the beginning of Tony Blair's premiership.

6th Season premiere

While attending the premiere, creator Peter Morgan shared that Princess Diana’s death was never a plan to exhibit in the series. Although back in October, he confirmed Variety that they will not be showing Diana's disastrous car crash, while opening up more about Season 6, Morgan elaborately told that he never even explored her death story while writing The Crown.

What did Morgan say?

“This was never going to be a story about how did she die? The police inquiry sorted all that out. We were never interested in that. It was always about, what was the impact on the family before and after her death? What was the truth of the nature of her relationship with Dodi Fayed?”, Morgan said.

What did Elizabeth say?

Elizabeth Debicki, who played the role of Princess Diana, was also present at the Sunday premiere. When she was asked the same question about Diana's death, she replied, “It’s a tricky conversation to have because you can’t say something like, legacy because it’s not, it’s an intelligent drama. But at the same time, we know that we’re dealing with an audience’s blend of real life memory and then an invention in the television show.”

“We did tread with as much respect as we possibly could have had, and that I know for sure. So, I’m glad because when I watched it back, I realised what a serious thing it was to make”, Debicki lastly added.

The Crown Season 6 release date

The 6th season of The Crown will be released in two parts by Netflix. The first 4 episodes will be dropped on November 16 and the remaining 6 episodes on December 14, 2023.
