Perilloor Premier League trailer, release date out: Nikhila Vimal, Sunny Wayne's web series promises a Kunjiramayanam-style laughter riot

Disney+ Hotstar is gearing up for the release of its third Malayalam web series this year. While the first two – Kerala Crime Files and Masterpeace – were a crime thriller and a family satire, respectively, Perilloor Premier League promises to be a political comedy satire from its latest trailer that was released on Wednesday.

The trailer of the Hotstar series promises a laughter riot, much like its writer Deepu Pradeep's Kunjiramayanam. With its rural setting and a plethora of characters in the backdrop of an election, the trailer hinted at a madcap comedy that results from the plight of its different residents. Nikhila Vimal, who plays Malavika in the series, seems to be unexpectedly handpicked to contest the election against another unlikely candidate essayed by Ashokan. Parallely, Sunny Wayne's character seems to be searching for his perfect match. How the duo's characters come together could form the plot of the series, which promises to be pacier than the previous Malayalam long-format projects that is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. 

Disney+ Hotstar’s Perilloor Premier League release date out

The series, which revolves around the gram panchayat elections in the titular town, is set to begin streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on January 5. Apart from Malayalam, the web series will also be available in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi and Bangla.

Perilloor Premier League had gone on floors in February 2023. Aju Varghese, Sarath Sabha, Ashokan and Adhri Joe of Thallumaala fame are also part of the cast of the series. While Aju had made his web series debut with Kerala Crime Files, Ashokan had starred in Nithya Menen and Sharafudheen’s Masterpeace, which was helmed by Oru Thekkan Thallu Case director Sreejith.

Malayalam web series galore on OTT platforms

Even at the peak of the pandemic, OTT platforms had only greenlit Malayalam direct-to-OTT films. However, with mainstream actors now showing interest in the web series content format – leading OTT platforms including Disney+ Hotstar and Sony LIV have already commissioned several shows in the language.

Perilloor Premier League is probably the first Malayalam web series with as many mainstream actors. Disney+ Hotstar had also last month announced that the platform will begin streaming Pharma, which will mark Nivin Pauly’s web series debut . The project, which also has Bollywood actor Rajat Kapur, is directed by PR Arun.

Sony LIV is set to begin streaming another satire titled Jai Mahendran, which has Saiju Kurup and Suhasini Maniratnam as part of the cast. Aavasavyuham and Purusha Pretham director Krishand is also gearing up to begin work on his web series titled Gangs of Trivandrum.
