Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan actress Priyamvada Kant: Bengali women have always been progressive

Priyamvada who plays a spirited rebel in the upcoming Zee Theatre teleplay Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan attributed her passion for the arts to her Bengali upbringing. In 2010, Priyamvada debuted in the show Bairi Piya and has gone from strength to strength as a popular television star since then. She has famously played Sharda in Tenali Rama and also conceptualised the show Sethji on Zee TV. She will now be seen as a spirited young woman Reena in Zee Theatre's teleplay, Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan. 

Adapted from Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s classic play ‘Ghosts’, the story features Reena as a self-willed rebel in a feudal household shadowed by dark secrets. Priyamvada is certain that the teleplay will especially resonate with women from her hometown Kolkata. She said, “Bengali women have always been extremely progressive and were even at the forefront of the freedom movement. They have a voice in literature, in feminism and they are unafraid to voice their opinions.  And I am certain that this story will definitely strike a chord with women across the country.”

Priyamvada also attributes her wide range of creative interests to her upbringing in Kolkata and said, “I was born and brought up in a typical Bengali household where it was very important to learn classical music and dance, paint, do your crafts and take part in sports.”

She learnt music, Odissi, and was soon dancing professionally. “Bengali culture, literature, and art run in my veins, in my blood as my parents are artists too. So naturally, theatre and any form of art call out to me. That's why I have worked across so many mediums from television to being on stage as a dancer, to doing plays, to web films as it's something that's in my DNA. I am a Bengali when it comes to art, culture, and literature,” she said.

Talking about the teleplay that narrates how the sins of the late Maharaja Kunwar Viraj Bhanu Pratap Singh destroy his family, Priyamvada said, "I think, this teleplay will find its audience across the country as it is extremely relevant to people from all classes, backgrounds, demographics, and languages."

The teleplay also stars Ila Arun, KK Raina, Param Singh, and Vijay Kashyap. It is adapted by Ila Arun, directed for stage by actor and director KK Raina and the filming director is Saurabh Shrivastava.
