The makers of the periodic drama 8/12 ushered in India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations on a special note, paying tribute to the freedom fighter trio, Benoy Bose, Badal Gupta, and Dinesh Chandra Gupta, with the release of the theme song ‘Binay-Badal-Dinesh.’ Bengali rock star Rupam Islam has crooned the song in his signature rugged voice to Soumya Rit’s lyrics and composition.

Speaking about the song, Soumya Rit stated that India’ s independence is ‘a hard-earned gift’ wherein lies the sacrifices of bravehearts like the three protagonists of this film. The song is a tribute to the nation and the revolutionary freedom fighters Benoy Bose, Badal Gupta and Dinesh Gupta who bravely fought against British rule by launching attacks on the Secretariat building in Kolkata.

Set in black-and-white, true to the period drama in form and style, the song is set to cavalry beats, showing the freedom fighter trio running on a beach. Rupam’s voice booms echoing the refrain ‘this country will be free’, juxtaposed with scenes of torture inflicted on the three in jail and other civilians. The montage shows the three training in arms, among other compelling visuals, set in a rock fusion track. The song ends with the three revolutionaries, clad in western suits and pants, charging into the Writer’s building and unleashing bullets right into the heart of the Britishers in India. The song gives you a glimpse of the tenor, tone and mood of the film.

The film directed by Arun Roy stars Kinjal Nanda as Benoy, Arna Mukhopadhyay as Badal and Suman Bose as Dinesh. Talking about his role as a patriot after his last film Hiralal, Kinjal Nanda told Etimes earlier that the film will unravel the questions on why did the three young men decide on such a radical step, and what happened in its aftermath.

On December 8, 1930, the three freedom fighters Benoy Bose, Badal Gupta, and Dinesh Chandra Gupta stormed into the Writer’s Building and shot N S Simpson, IG prison Calcutta, who was infamous for inflicting brutality on political activists in prison. He was shot along with other Britishers as a symbol of resistance to their colonisation in the county, and more importantly, to terrify the Britishers into slackening their grip on India. The attack was planned on the then administrative hub of Kolkata, Writer’s Building.

8/11 also stars Anushka Chakraborty and Bipasha Saha in pivotal roles. The release date of the film is not yet announced.
