Two Indian women, Anasuya Sengupta and Payal Kapadia, have made India proud in the Cannes Film Festival. Anasuya was awarded the Best Actress in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival for her performance in The Shameless. Payal won the Grand Prix for her film All We Imagine Is Light. The country is elated with its achievements.
Anasuya hails from Kolkata. Celebrities like Parambrata Chatterjee congratulated them. His social media post on Sunday mentioned Anasuya and Payel. Param congratulated them and wrote, “While we sought other glories, they created history, without making any noise of it!”

After 30 years, an Indian film was nominated in the main section of Cannes. She narrowly missed the highest honour, Palme d'Or, and got the second highest prize, Grand Prix. Anasuya is the first Indian actress to be awarded in the section. After the announcement, she cried in joy. Payal told the journalists, “It was like a dream to me. It is unimaginable. A heartfelt thanks to everyone.” Parambrata is in Mumbai right now. From there, the actor wrote, “We watch in awe and reverence, as two independent artistes , working patiently and silently, miles away from the spotlight of their respective industries, have brought maximum honour to Indian cinema!”
Many other Indian stars also expressed delight at the news. Riddhi Sen congratulated the girls on social media. Riddhi raised the question, “Will castings still continue to happen based on social media followers and not based on craft and hard work? Will we continue casting hackneyed actors labelling themselves as stars (which they are also clearly incapable of being), giving them opportunities time and again to only play themselves and guard their lack of skill by giving priority to gimmicks, labels, and brands...?”
