Following through on his promise, Diljit Dosanjh posted a special message alongside the teaser for the highly anticipated film Panjab '95 on Friday. "Full movie, no cuts." The Punjabi star shared the teaser on his social media pages. He tagged his post with the hashtag "Challenge The Darkness." Honey Trehan directed and Ronnie Screwvala produced the film, which is scheduled to premiere internationally in theatres on February 7.
"Look at the history of Punjab, sir," says Arjun Rampal's character in the trailer. From the death of Indira Gandhi to the riots of 1984, from the rule of the president to the assassination of the chief minister, why is Punjab suffering today?
The teaser then introduces Dosanjh as Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh rights activist investigating Sukhdev Singh's abduction. The actor's character risks his life to capture images in an attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding Sukhdev's disappearance.
The real-life story of Jaswant Singh Khalra, who revealed the secret cremations, disappearances, and 25,000 unlawful killings committed by the Punjab Police, is the inspiration for the film. Reportedly, the film would depict his struggle for justice prior to his abduction, torture, and murder at the hands of the same police squad. Reports state that a jury found six officers guilty of the crime.
Dosanjh appeared severely injured in a series of behind-the-scenes photos from Panjab '95, which he posted to his social media on January 15.
In the past, the film had major challenges; for example, the CBFC supposedly recommended 120 cuts because of the delicate nature of the subject matter. For the past two years, production on the film has stalled. According to reports, Jaswant Singh Khalra's family was pleased with the film after seeing it in 2022.
The film is set for an international release; however, nothing has been confirmed about when it will get a release in India. But the makers have unveiled the OTT partner, and it will be streaming on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium) in the coming weeks.
