Judging by the success of Unni Mukundan’s Marco in states outside Kerala, even Malayalam action-thrillers seem to have found a fanbase. Actor-director Joju George’s Pani, which is gearing up for its OTT release, could appeal to the same audience that loved Marco – after all, it has action, is a revenge thriller, and has its fair share of violence.
The movie revolves around two youngsters who are trying to make it big in the world of crime. As they take on their first task as part of a ‘quotation’, their paths cross with the crime honchos of the city – Giri and his family. How the fearless duo takes it as an opportunity to speed their race to the top and become a brand in the world of crime, and the consequences they have to face by going up against someone more vengeful forms the plot of Pani.
Pani, which marked Malik and Nayattu actor Joju’s directorial debut, is all set to begin streaming on Sony LIV on January 16. The movie will be available to stream in five languages – Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
The film, which received mixed reviews from critics, had a decent run at the box office – collecting Rs 34 Cr worldwide in 50 days. Pani also suffered from changing its release date several times, with Joju continuously working to improve the final output.
Even though Pani isn’t as violent as Marco, the film has several graphic sequences including dismemberment and sexual assault. The climax sequence of the film was also gory for a lot of the audience, who had watched it in theatres.
Apart from Joju, the movie has Sagar Surya, Junaiz VP, Chandhini Sreedharan, Abhinaya, Bobby Kurian, Prashanth Alexander and Sujith Shankar as part of the cast.
