The country as a whole has been awaiting the release of Paatal Lok Season 2 for a better part of five years, and Amazon Prime Video recently surprised fans by announcing the second season's release date. The show marks the return of recurring characters and is one of the most anticipated shows of the year. Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishwak Singh, Neeraj Kabi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Gul Panag, and an ensemble cast; created by Sudip Sharma, Paatal Lok has gained a massive fan base for its concept and its exploration of hierarchy and power structures in the Hindi heartland of India. Now, what if we told you that the initial plans would have given the show a completely different title—one that doesn’t sound bad at all?
For the uninitiated, Paatal Lok follows the life of Hathiram Chaudhary, played by Jaideep Ahlawat, as he solves a high-profile case that opens a new can of worms. The gripping story made Paatal Lok a brand with a high recall value. However, according to several reports, the original plan was to title the show Jamuna Paar instead of Paatal Lok. Yes, you read that right.
Reports suggest that the makers referred to the show as Jamuna Paar for a long time before finalizing Paatal Lok. The original title made sense since Jamuna Paar, as a geographical and cultural landscape, plays a significant role in the show. However, sticking to Jamuna Paar might have made the title harder to justify, given the series now shifts to Nagaland in Season 2.
Sudip Sharma, the showrunner and creator of Paatal Lok Seasons 1 and 2, directed by Avinash Arun, spoke about the challenges of changing the geography completely in Season 2. When asked about a possible Season 3, Sharma said there are no concrete plans yet, though there is hope for Hathiram to return and solve another case.
When asked if Paatal Lok Season 3 is already on track, Sharma explained, “No. It’s not on track already. It takes a lot of time. Like I told you, it takes four to five years to make a show. Sometimes it takes less, but both seasons of Paatal Lok took half a decade each. So, we’ll see how it goes, and what everyone’s consensus is—Pancho ki kya rai hai (what the bosses have to say).”
He added, “We all have our commitments, but we’ll see. I’m open to the idea, but a lot of things need to fall into place for a show like this. At this point, Season 2 is releasing, and I’m just happy about that.”
Paatal Lok Season 2 hits Amazon Prime Video on January 17, while Season 1 is already streaming on the platform. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates from the world of streaming and films.
