If there is one thing that has kept us hooked for the past 20 hours or so, it has to be Paatal Lok Season 2. Starring Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead, the show returns with its second season five years after the first aired, creating a great deal of curiosity. Created by Sudip Sharma and directed by Avinash Arun, the show shifts its base to Nagaland after a high-profile politician from Dimapur, Nagaland, is killed in Delhi. At the same time, a woman from Jamuna Par seeks Hathiram’s help to find her missing husband. The two cases are coincidentally connected, and Hathiram has a new mystery to solve. In the hands of Sharma, this season is gripping, gritty, and full of hell. He isn’t even afraid to kill the most prominent of characters in the show.
We discuss SPOILERS here, and you have been warned! So, in midseason, the biggest twist appears when Imran Ansari, played by the brilliant Ishwak Singh, is shot dead by Daniel. Hathiram, who is back in Delhi for his son’s birthday, lives with the regret of not being there to save his friend, Ansari. This case is now more than just a murder; for Hathiram, it’s about avenging his friend’s death. As the finale unfolds, in hand-to-hand combat, Hathiram finds Daniel, kills him, and takes his revenge. But that’s not the only thing he wants to get.
Hathiram goes ahead and solves this complex mystery. The key players are Jonathan Thom (the dead politician), Rose Lizo, and Raghu Paswan, who are all connected to the unsolved mystery. Hathiram decodes how Raghu and Lizo are clearly not involved in killing Thom. After Uncle Ken tells Hathiram about how bad a person Thom is and how killing him for Nagaland’s bright future is important, things start to get clearer. But where is Raghu Paswan? How did Rose become the prime suspect in the first place?
Thom had promised Rose that he would pay her Rs 10 lakh. Rose then takes Raghu’s help to reach the hotel Nagaland Sadan to take the money from Jonathan. He drops her in an auto-rickshaw. But when Rose reaches the hotel, she realizes Thom is already dead and runs away out of fear. The footage of her running from the hotel makes her the prime suspect, and the entire game is laid bare. But what about Raghu? Well, remember the auto?
The rickshaw belongs to the roommate who had covered Raghu's expenses during the pandemic. When Raghu is promised Rs 5 lakh by Rose, he borrows the roommate’s rickshaw, promising them Rs 10,000. But when Rose comes with no money and the news that Thom is dead, Raghu helps her flee to Nagaland and return home with no money. The roommates think he is lying to avoid paying them, and in the confrontation, they end up killing Raghu and burying his body on a farm nearby.
That brings us to the last scene where Hathiram locates Thom’s money and finds it amounts to Rs 2 crore. But the moralistic man he is, he only takes Rs 5 lakh out of it and gives it to Raghu’s son, who is returning to his hometown with his grandparents. But what will happen to Hathiram? The last we know about him is that he has left the job and no longer wants to be a cop because of the hell he has seen over the past few years. Will he actually quit? Only Sudip Sharma can answer that.
Sudip Sharma is the showrunner/creator of Paatal Lok Season 1 and 2, which is directed by Avinash Arun. Sharma, in a conversation with OTTplay, spoke about the show and how it was to change the geography completely in Season 2. When asked about Season 3, he said there are no plans for the same as of yet, and he will see if the stars align for a third season. He also expressed hope that Hathiram will return to solve another case.
When asked whether Paatal Lok Season 3 is already on track, Sudip Sharma said, “No. In the sense that it's not on track already. It takes a lot of time like I told you, it takes four to five years to make a show. Sometimes it takes less, but in making Paatal Lok, both seasons took half a decade each. So we will see how it goes, we’ll see what everyone’s consensus says. Pancho ki kya rai hai (what the bosses have to say). This character (Hathiram) is very fun and interesting, but I haven't thought about whether I will make a third season or not. We all have our own commitments, but we will see. I am open to the idea, but a lot of things need to fall into place and come together for a show like this. At this point in time, Season 2 is releasing, and I am just happy about that.”
Paatal Lok Season 2 was released on Amazon Prime Video on January 17. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
