The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers’ atmospheric psychological thriller, has just dropped on Netflix. Featuring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe in the lead, the film follows two lighthouse keepers slowly coming undone after being isolated on a remote island. Today’s Now You Know is about some lesser-known trivia about this black-and-white movie. Lets kickoff!
1. For the movie, Pattinson’s naturally dark mustache had to be dyed black for him to resemble his character. On the other hand, Dafoe’s bad teeth were also achieved with the help of prosthetics.
2. A particular scene where Pattinson was seen walking into the ocean was filmed over 25 times because heightened moisture levels would fog the lens up. In fact, the camera equipment would often malfunction because of how humid Nova Scotia was.
3. The residents of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, tried hard to preserve the lighthouse set constructed for the movie on location. However, the structure, made out of wood, was removed because of safety protocols.
4. The film is inspired by a real-life incident that took place in 1801, in which two Welsh lighthouse keepers suffered a similar fate as the characters in the film. While one of the men, while stranded on the island, lost his life, his death drove the other one to madness.
