Today it's about the Bengali film Belaseshe. Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee weaved a compelling narrative of old age and separation. Culling an intriguing interpersonal dynamic between a couple about to celebrate their 50th marriage anniversary, Belaseshe spoke about reinventing yourself despite the barrier of age. Biswanath Majumdar, the patriarch of a prestigious book shop in the famed College Street of Kolkata, undergoes a change of heart when he decides to lead a more adventurous life, away from the shackles and responsibilities of a large family. He wishes to roam the world and follow in the footsteps of his friend and fellow explorer-turned-vlogger. Arati, his wife, who till now followed the perfect role of ‘woman of the house’, takes his desire to separate with considerable shock. Her children rally behind her in the divorce proceedings, intermittently getting angry at their father, and pleading with him to change his mind.  

The couple’s reconciliation is also shot beautifully, charting the character that each takes on their personal journeys. Belaseshe was revolutionary in the way that it navigated a relationship that has weathered the times and has seen generations grow before them. Soumitra Chatterjee as Biswanath and Swatilekha Sengupta as Arati inject their characters with authenticity and poignance. Their craft shines in the way the two veterans occupy the screen with their subtle moves, silent glances and stifled sighs.
