Director Karthik Subbaraj has been honoured with the Pathbreaking Storyteller award at the prestigious OTTplay Changemakers Awards 2023 tonight. The glittery award ceremony took place at JW Marriott (Juhu), Mumbai, which was attended by the who’s who of the Indian film fraternity. Karthik Subbaraj wasn't present at the award and the trophy will be delivered to him shortly.
Karthik Subbaraj, shot to limelight right with his directorial debut Pizza (2012), a supernatural mystery thriller, which starred Vijay Sethupathi and Ramya Nambeesan. He later experimented with a wide range of subjects through his films which include Jigarthanda, Iraivi, Petta, Mercury, Jagame Thandiram and Mahaan to name a few. He also bankrolled a number of films under his production house Bench Talkies. Some of the projects as a producer include Aviyal, Meyaadha Maan, Penguin, Triples and Ammu.
He also ventured into the digital space with Kallachirippu, Putham Pudhu Kaalai, Navarasa, to name. His last release as a director, Mahaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram in the lead, too, skipped theatrical release and dropped on Amazon Prime Video. The film revolves around a teacher, who goes on to become a liquor baron after being abandoned by his family. The film received acclaim from critics and audiences.
The ‘Pathbreaking Storyteller’ award is conferred on him in recognition of the remarkable films that he has directed in his career. The ‘OTTplay Changemakers Awards 2023’ intend to honour and celebrate the groundbreakers and trendsetters of the entertainment industry. With Indian cinema on the cusp of remarkable transitions, it’s pertinent to honour and boost the confidence of those young minds that are bringing about the change. It’s the first edition of the awards ceremony.
