For its second year running, India's first OTT awards event is back. The world over, people are responding to great content, and the OTTplay Awards are a pan-India OTT awards show that aims to celebrate the most compelling OTT films, shows, actors, and filmmakers from across the nation that have kept us immersed in binge-worthy entertainment throughout the year. The much-awaited awards are set to be held on October 29, 2023, in Mumbai.
Ahead of the exciting event, take a look at films nominated in the Best Film category at the OTTplay Awards 2023:
Directed by Vasan Bala, the neo-noir crime comedy thriller stars Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi, and Radhika Apte in the lead roles. In the film, after the unexpected end of a passionate love affair, a sleek robotics specialist decides to join a murder plot, but nothing is what it seems to be, not even death.
The Jasmeet K. Reen-directed dark comedy film boasts a talented cast, including Shefali Shah, Alia Bhatt, Vijay Raaz, and Roshan Mathew. The film, co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Alia, dives into the struggles of a mother and daughter as they search for love and establish themselves in Mumbai while also facing personal issues.
Paka, also released as River of Blood, is a Malayalam drama film directed by Nithin Lukose. Featuring a star cast of Basil Paulose, Vinitha Koshy, Nithin George, Abhilash Nair, Athul John, Jose Kizhakkkan, and Joseph Manikkal, the film is co-produced by Raj Rachakonda and Anurag Kashyap. There are long, brutal cycles of revenge between two families along a serpentine river in northern Kerala, which is explored in Paka. Johnny and Anna want to put an end to their families' animosity so that they can start a new life together. Johnny's uncle Kocheppu's release from prison and subsequent disappearance put a damper on their budding romance and led them down a path of murder and vengeance.
Rahul V. Chittella's heartfelt family drama stars Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, Suraj Sharma, and Amol Palekar. Talking about the plot of Gulmohar, it's been decades, yet the Batra family has been at the same address—"Gulmohar"—since the beginning. Before the family's Gulmohar villa is demolished to make room for an apartment block, they gather for one last celebration. Ghazal and rumours, however, reveal the discordant notes in their relationships, drawing the listener deeper into the turbulence of their lives both now and in the past. Destiny is veiled in mystery in the postcards of memory.
Apoorv Singh Kharki's hard-hitting legal drama features Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role. Based on real events, this ZEE5 Original follows a lawyer as he fights a lengthy legal struggle against a godman who has been accused of sexually molesting a young child.
A red carpet is rolled out for the best in acting, writing, directing, producing, and directing at the OTTplay Awards, with categories ranging from best film to best web series. The emphasis here is on democratisation, or creating a level playing field on which outstanding content and stellar performances can shine across language barriers.
