Srijit Mukherji’s VFX marvel Oti Uttam, which suffered a legal dispute, is finally set to hit the theatre. This July 24, on the death anniversary of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, the pre-teaser of the film will be dropped. According to sources, the film will release in December. Produced by Camelia Productions, the film features Gourab Chatterjee, Anindya Sengupta, Roshni Bhattacharya, and others. The pre-teaser release event will take place at Uttam Kumar’s Bhowanipore house.
Srijit famously announced that Uttam Kumar will also be part of Oti Uttam. It is said to be a work of VFX. Elaborating on the process, Srijit earlier said, “I went through many films by the legend to recreate the character. I had to back-calculate everything while penning the script and screenplay. I think it is happening for the first time in cinema.”
Oti Uttam is a romantic comedy. It talks about a PhD scholar, played by Anindya Sengupta, who is pursuing his research in Uttam Kumar. He likes a girl but gets rejected. He decides to bring Uttam Kumar’s spirit with the help of Gourab Chatterjee, the legend’s grandson in this film, and in real life. “Uttam’s spirit comes and helps the scholar to get his girl,” explained Srijit. While Roshni Bhattacharya will debut on the big screen with this film, Laboni Sarkar and Shubhashish Mukherjee will also be seen as pivotal characters. The music of the film is composed by another debutant Saptak Sanai Das, a young musician.
The film got into a legal tiff with another production house, Alaknanda Arts – makers of Achena Uttam. The house alleged that the rights of Uttam Kumar’s biopic were with them and Mahanayak’s family disregarded the contract when Srijit released the poster. Uttam Kumar’s family, Srijit, and the production house Camelia were served notice. Now the film is all set to release.
