On June 17, 2023, a major streamer announced three live-action adaptations as part of the its upcoming slate of releases. One of them is One Piece, a fantasy adventure series that attempts to bring the cult classic Japanese manga series of the same name to life with a whole new cast in place that includes actors Iñaki Godoy (as Monkey D. Luffy), Mackenyu (as Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd as (Nami) and several others.

The original manga series, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, in pursuit of the mythical treasure called One Piece and eventually becoming the next King of the Pirates. Oda's work has gained international fame over the years for its vibrant characters and quirky world comprising pirates, thieves, bounty hunters and a unique body named 'World Government'.

When and where to watch One Piece on OTT

So, with the success of the animation series in mind, there's a lot of anticipation (and also scepticism) among fans to see what the live-action version has in store. Netflix, the streamer producing the series, too, has billed One Piece as one of the main components of its upcoming slate of original releases so, it would be interesting to see what the reception is like.

One Piece, developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, will premiere on Netflix on August 31, 2023.

The cast of the series also includes Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, Taz Skylar, Vincent Regan, Morgan Davies, Peter Gadiot and others with Ian McShane serving as the narrator.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Three-Body Problem

At the same Tudum event earlier this year, Netflix emphatically announced that along with One Piece, their roster now includes two other exciting live-action adaptations, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Three-Body Problem. The former, of course, is based on the famed animation TV series of the name with Albert Kim developing it as a full-blown series for Netflix. Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Daniel Dae Kim star in the upcoming show.
