While several Malayalam web series have been lapped up by the audience on YouTube, leading OTT platforms were yet to produce a big-budget venture in the language. This changes with 2023, with a major production now starting work on a Malayalam web series that features mainstream actors Sunny Wayne, Nikhila Vimal and Aju Varghese as part of its cast.

On Thursday, the web series, produced by E4 Entertainments and helmed by director Praveen Chandran, went on floors. Nikhila was part of the pooja function of the web series, which is scripted by Kunjiramayanam and Padmini writer Deepu Pradeep. Praveen had previously worked as the chief associate director in Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup and Tovino Thomas’ Luca.

Sharing the photos from the switch-on ceremony on his social media page, Deepu wrote, “My OTT debut, directed by Praveen Chandran and produced by E4 Entertainments, kicked off today. This, for sure, is going to be a laugh riot.” The scriptwriter, however, did not reveal which platform that show will be streaming on. Pran

The web series is one of the many other OTT shows that have been greenlit from Malayalam by leading streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Sony LIV and Disney+ Hotstar.

OTTplay recently broke the news that Asif Ali was set to make his web series debut with a project helmed by Jan.E.Man director Chidambaram. The venture, which is reportedly made on a budget of over Rs 15 crore, is expected to be the most expensive web series in Malayalam.

Meanwhile, Prithviraj Sukumaran has been roped in to act in a web series on Biscuit Baron Rajan Pillai that is expected to stream on Netflix. The actor will also be directing the pilot episode of the series, which is in the developmental stage. Netflix is reportedly also in talks with C U Soon and Malik director Mahesh Narayanan for a web series.
