Song Kang, best known for his Netflix hit My Demon, first stole hearts with his role in Nevertheless (2021). While K-Dramas are known for their swoon-worthy romances, Nevertheless sparked a different kind of conversation. It challenged the typical K-Drama trope of the perfect, wealthy male lead. Song Kang’s character, Park Jae-Eon, is anything but usual. He's charming and flirty, but is commitment-phobic. Nevertheless may not have offered the typical fairy-tale romance, but it certainly captured the audience's attention.  Even after drawing flak for showing the male lead as a womaniser, Nevertheless is one of the most-watched K-Dramas on Netflix.

Nevertheless plot

The story introduces Park Jae-Eon, a self-proclaimed womaniser, who has commitment issues. He often gets involved in playful flirting, which makes him quite popular among young women. However, soon he finds himself drawn to Yu Na-Bi, a woman who craves companionship but scoffs at the idea of love. Can their connection blossom into something serious, or will their contrasting views on love ultimately drive them apart?

How does Nevertheless end?

Despite presenting a happy ending, viewers remained confused about Na-Bi’s decision to date Jae-Eon once again. The ending scene captures the complexities of Jae-Eon and Na-Bi’s relationship. Despite knowing that Jae-Eon might never change, Na-Bi chooses to embrace uncertainty, sealing it with a passionate kiss. The last few minutes of them walking hand-in-hand suggest the possibility of a new beginning.

Why did Yu Na-Bi choose Park Jae-Eon in the end?

After looking at Na-Bi's previous failed relationships, Yu Na-Bi realises that Jae-Eon is the only boyfriend who understands her and respects her quite well, despite being a flirt. With Jae-Eon, Na-Bi can openly show her vulnerable side, rather than be scared that he might leave her. Although their relationship is also not perfect, Na-Bi feels relaxed and happy with Jae-Eon. Her choice may leave you with numerous questions, but Na-Bi makes her own decisions in love.

The title of the drama is quite interesting as it hints at Yu Na-Bi’s thought process. Even all the subtitles of each episode hint at her internal conflict as she's aware of Jae-Eon’s manipulative behaviour yet keeps giving. For instance, Episode 9, titled - ‘I Know It's Over…Nevertheless’, hints at Na-Bi’s dilemma on whether she should take back Jae-Eon in her life, or not. Similarly, the last episode titled - ‘Nevertheless..I Still’ hints at Na-Bi's ultimate decision.
