Poorna Jagannathan, known for her role as Riana Sarai in Ayan Mukherji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, recently shared her experience and revealed why she hasn't pursued more Bollywood films since its release. As the film recently completed its 10th anniversary, Poorna opened up about her journey in the industry and the lack of subsequent offers.
During an interview with News18, the actor candidly expressed, "Yeah, I know. It's been 10 years since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. I mean, literally, Bollywood hasn't come calling. It said goodbye to me, and then the phone hasn't been [ringing]."
Poorna shed light on the unique circumstances surrounding the making of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and how they added to the memorable experience. She reminisced about filming a crucial scene on a boat in France, revealing that the script was being written on the spot, making it a spontaneous and unpredictable process.
Speaking about the director, Ayan Mukherji, she recalled their initial meeting, where he admitted to not having written the ending of the film. Despite this unconventional approach, the movie went on to become one of the highest-grossing films in Bollywood history.
The actor's portrayal of Riana Sarai, a tour conductor who plays a pivotal role in helping Ranbir Kapoor's character, Bunny, secure his dream job, received positive reviews. However, despite her talent and success with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Poorna found herself longing for more substantial opportunities in the industry.
While she may not have been actively involved in Bollywood projects, Poorna has continued to make her mark in the entertainment world. She has explored various avenues, including working in American television and theatre. Notably, audiences will soon see her in the final season of the popular Netflix series Never Have I Ever.
