Kaatera, produced by Rockline Venkatesh under his banner Rockline Entertainments, and directed by Tharun Kishore Sudhir, released in theatres on December 29, last year, a week after Salaar and came out victorious as the box office success that leading man Darshan needed after a lacklustre start to 2023 with Kranti. The film had a good 50-day run in theatres and then came on OTT on February 9, dropping on Zee5, albeit only in its Kannada original version.
Tharun had spoken about the possibility of releasing a Tamil and Telugu version of the film before it came on OTT, and that dubbing work had been initiated, but that didn’t happen eventually. Ever since the film’s OTT outing, fans from across the border have been waiting for the dubbed versions to also drop and a few days ago, reports emerged that Zee5 was making the Tamil and Telugu audio versions available in time for the festive weekend (Eid/Vishu). But Kaatera is still only in its Kannada version on the platform, prompting netizens to urge the streamer to make the other versions available soon.
When Kaatera was announced, Tharun Sudhir and Challenging Star Darshan had a hit commercial film called Roberrt to their credit. For their latest collaboration, though, Tharun was set to direct a script by writer-filmmaker Jadesha K Hampi. Tharun had co-produced Jadesha’s Guru Shishyaru, along with actor Sharan and had a working relationship with the filmmaker before embarking on the collaboration for what would be Darshans 56thfilm. Set in the 70s, Kaatera was not a typical commercial film, and blended content with mass elements, making it a film meant for all audiences.
The film, which also stars Shruthi, Kumar Govind, Rohith Pandavapura, Jagapathi Babu, among others, marked the big screen debut of Aradhanaa, the daughter of veteran actress Malashree. The V Harikrishna musical had Sudhakar as the cinematographer.
