After the anxious wait, the prestigious National Film Awards 2023 have been announced. The Vicky Kaushal starrer ‘Sardar Udham’ has been adjudged as the ‘Best Hindi Film’. The film was directed by Shoojit Sircar, and was produced by Rising Sun Films in collaboration with Kino Works. Besides bagging the ‘Best Hindi Film’, the film also bagged the awards for ‘Best Costume Designer’ (Veera Kapur) and ‘Best Production Design’ (Dmitrii Malich and Mansi Dhruv Mehta), 'Best Cinematography' and 'Best Audiography'.
Today, at the prestigious National Film Awards of this year, the film was adjudged as the ‘Best Film’. The film starred Vicky Kaushal in the lead role. Amongst the many films that he has done, ‘Sardar Udham’ is considered as one of the path breaking films of his career.
For the unversed, ‘Sardar Udham’ happens to be a film that was based on the illustrious life of one of India’s prominent freedom fighters Udham Singh, who hailed from Punjab. Besides being a freedom fighter, Udham Singh was known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer in order to avenge the merciless incident that had taken place at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, at the behest of Michael O'Dwyer. Needless to say, Vicky Kaushal excelled in the titular role of ‘Sardar Udham’. Besides Vicky Kaushal, ‘Sardar Udham’ also starred Shaun Scott, Stephen Hogan, Amol Parashar, Banita Sandhu and Kirsty Averton in supporting roles.
Besides the film’s premise, almost every other department of the film was appreciated by the critics and the masses alike. One of the film’s highlights was definitely its stunning cinematography by the extremely talented Avik Mukhopadhyay. The way he had depicted the Jallianwala Bagh massacre till gives goosebumps. Besides him, many appreciated Veera Kapur for the ‘timely’ costumes, which really stood out. What was remarkable about the costumes was that, they were totally in tune with that era!
Looking back, the film had got delayed due to the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which had led to a lockdown of theatres. The makers of the film, then, decided to go ahead with an OTT release. The film was eventually released on Amazon Prime Video.
