Even before its theatrical release, the audience who could catch Mammootty’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam at the International Film Festival of Kerala in December 2022, were all praise for the Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial. Though the movie didn’t create waves at the box office, as the megastar’s previous releases, the film is now lauded by those who watched it after it began streaming on Netflix on Thursday.
The movie, which is scripted by S Hareesh and has Theni Easwar as its cinematographer, revolves around a theatre artiste named James who begins behaving like a Tamil villager named Sundaram, who had passed away almost six year ago. How the families of both come to terms with his predicament while James goes on living like Sundaram for a day form the plot of this drama, which hit theatres in January.
In an earlier interview, Lijo, who worked with the megastar for the first time in Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, had said that he approached Mammootty for the role as it required someone of his calibre to pull it off. This also seems the popular opinion on social media. Here’s round-up of what the audience are saying about the film and the actor’s performance.
'Performance of a lifetime'
Majority of the audience hailed Mammootty's performance and how seamless he was at shifting from James to Sundaram, in terms of expressions, gait and body language. While James is a Malayali in the film, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam had him conversing in Tamil for most of his screentime.
'A magical masterpiece'
Director Lijo was also lauded for his making, with many praising him for choosing a surreal story such as this, casting a superstar as its lead and executing it with such conviction. Cinematographer Theni Easwar's work along with Fazal A Backer's sound mixing also were the highlights, users had pointed out on Twitter.
Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, which also has Ashokan, Ramya Pandian and Rajesh Sharma, is currently streaming in Malayalam, Hindi and Telugu on Netflix. The dialogues in the original version is a mix of both Malayalam and Tamil and that's why the makers have opted not to release a separate Tamil version on OTT.
