Early on January 9, the buzz was that director Nagashekar’s Sanju Weds Geetha 2 would not be released on January 10. The assumption then was that the makers chose to push the release ahead, given the struggle to get screens/shows in Karnataka, even though the filmmaker had, only days ago, said that he was soldiering on despite this difficult situation. However, it later emerged that the uncertainty around the release of the film was owing to undisclosed legal troubles.
According to a source from the team, there’s a stay order on the release of Sanju Weds Geetha. At the time of this report, Nagashekar and leading man Srinagara Kitty were in court to ascertain the grounds of the stay, the party/parties involved and the possibility of vacating the same and releasing the film as planned on January 10, said the source. Another added that a Hyderabad-based financier has sought the stay over non-repayment of funds and is seeking repayment before the release. At the moment, the release of the film remains doubtful.
Sanju Weds Geetha 2, meanwhile, is not a sequel to the 2011 hit that had Kitty and Ramya in the lead. The filmmaker has, however, used the title, as he felt that the character name Sanju fits Kitty perfectly. Based on a true story, the romantic drama, which also explores sericulture as part of the narrative, has Rachita Ram as the leading lady. There is no connection between Sanju Weds Geetha and Sanju Weds Geetha 2, Nagashekar had said recently.
The impediment in the release comes after the filmmaker revealed that for the first time in his career, one of his Kannada films was set to be exhibited widely across the USA. Nagashekar said that all his earlier efforts over the years remained futile and that distributors showed interest after ‘testing’ the quality of the product.
