Dhootha is Amazon Prime Video's latest web series that will be out on December 1, 2023. Vikram Kumar has directed this series and talks about the show, casting Naga Chaitanya, his love for OTT, and praise from Nagarjuna. Here is the transcript.
Dhootha was never meant for the big screen
There is news that Dhootha was initially supposed to be made as a film. When asked about the same, Vikram Kumar says ever since the OTT boom came in, I always wanted to make a project with a supernatural backdrop in the digital platform, and when Amazon approached me, I decided to go ahead.
Dhootha is a messenger in disguise
Dhootha means a messenger in English. The show is based on the life of a journalist played by Naga Chaitanya. He goes through so many issues in life and everything is connected through a newspaper which gives him some message or the other about the crime.
Dhootha has the strength to hold up to twenty episodes.
When asked about the episodes and their length, Vikram says "Dhootha has eight episodes in total and each part will end on a terrific hook. The subject has so much content that Dhootha has the strength to hold up to twenty episodes and can be narrated in an even more detailed manner.
Naga Chaitanya initially rejected Dhootha
When asked about casting Naga Chaitanya in the series, Vikram says "I had narrated a different story to him during the making of Manam but he was not keen to do horror thriller. But the moment I narrated the story of Dhootha, Chay loved his role and okayed the project right away".
Parvathi Thiruvothu is a versatile actress
Dhootha has popular heroines Parvathi Thiruvothu, Prachi Desai, and Priya Bhavani Shankar in key roles. When asked about casting them, Virak says "I chose Parvathi for the revolutionary role. She’s a versatile actor and brings a brilliant performance as a police officer."
Nagarjuns loved Chay's performance in Dhootha
Naga Chaitanya is seen in a very intense role for the first time in his career. When asked about the same, Vikram says "Chay is a very underrated actor and gave a splendid performance as a journalist with grey shades. His dad, Nagarjuna loved his performance and praised me for showcasing him in such a new dimension".
I loved The Family Man and Jubiliee
When asked about creating more projects for OTT, Vikram says that the digital platforms give him more scope to create drama and tell stories in a bold manner. "Shows like The Family Man and Jubilee impressed me the most and I will make more shows in the days to come".
