Many of them have been impatiently waiting for the OTT premiere of Munjya after its unprecedented success on the big screen. Aditya Sarpotdar's 2024 comedy-horror film features Sharvari, Abhay Verma, Sathyaraj, and Mona Singh among its stars. The wait appears to be almost over, but not for OTT fans keen on the film's release. Munjya will make its television debut on Star Gold this Saturday, August 24, 2024, ahead of its Disney+ Hotstar premiere.
Produced by Maddock Films' Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan, the fourth installment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe revolves around the myth of Munjya, drawing from Indian mythology and folklore. While visiting his hometown, a young guy (Verma) learns a family secret and encounters the furious Munjya, who is eager to tie the knot. Munjya has the young guy and the woman he loves trapped in his grasp, setting the stage for an exciting, hilarious, and horrifying adventure.
Munjya opened in theatres worldwide on June 7, 2024, to a resounding reception from critics. Surprising audiences, the film became the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024, earning Rs. 132 crore globally despite only spending Rs. 30 crore on production.
Screenwriter Niren Bhatt called Munjya a hideous, innocent monster in an interview with Mid Day, citing his early demise as the reason. In order to satisfy its desires, Munjya frequently becomes fixated on marriage, which causes difficulties for individuals. Most Munjyas aren't evil, but they are immature and a pain in the neck. Strangely, they enjoy tossing pebbles at people who are standing beneath trees.
According to Bhatt, the story first came to their attention when Yogesh Chandekar connected Maddock Films with a famous person from his area. Bhatt and Kaushik spent three years researching the narrative, visiting various wadas and orchards in the Ganpatipule and Dapoli regions—the supposedly tied-down places of the Munjyas.
Munjya, the first computer-generated film featuring an animated character, has garnered significant attention. According to the makers, Aditya Sarpotdar's film explores the mythical creature from Indian culture. For almost a year, the makers worked with DNEG to create the creepy, naughty protagonist exclusively using CGI. Half of the film's budget went on visual effects, a significant amount that Sarpotdar noted in an interview with PTI. To create an accurate computer-generated creature, they conducted thorough research and development.
Abhay Verma joined Sharvari in the film. A lot of people can relate to the character she plays, a modern lady who puts her aspirations first in today's world, the actor said when asked to describe her part. She strikes a chord with many women due to her relatable demeanour and her dating experiences.
Mona stated in an interview with ANI that her portrayal of Pammi, who is fiercely protective and strict with her son, sets the stage for a journey full of unforeseen challenges and turns.
