Lock Upp winner Munawar Faruqui has revealed that he was suicidal after he became a part of a controversy. He served jail time for a joke which he reportedly did not make. Munawar was scared when people in power threatened him.

The stand-up comedian had a candid chat with Siddharth Kannan where he revealed he was suicidal after the low phase of his life arrived. “I don’t understand this, but sometimes I feel as if I am upset with myself and punish myself,” he said, adding, “I feel so guilty that I want to end everything.”

Munawar has often said that even though he is famous, he is estranged from himself. He has been through so many low points that when things are going right for him, he automatically wishes they go wrong so that he can feel normal again.

The comedian lost his mother to suicide. He explained that in Islam, harming your own body – whether through tattoo or smoking is considered a sin and thus, killing oneself is the biggest sin. However, he has come to realize something else, something more. He asked, “Such a smart woman, why did she do this knowing it's a sin? It is said that weak people do this, but last 3-4 years I realised that only very strong people can do this (suicide).”

The two things that has kept him from killing himself are – God wouldn’t allow him to and he has responsibilities towards other people. When he realizes how would they react, Munawar stops himself from taking any step towards suicide.

When he was out of work (because of being imprisoned), Munawar felt depressed. He would wonder why are things happening and what would become of the 25-30 people who are depending on his livelihood.

While Munawar is not scared of legal action because he has the censor certificate, he fears for safety. “When people in power, people who are elected threaten you, it is scary,” he says, further adding that it isn’t even his safety that he is concerned about but his fans’ safety.

Munawar Faruqui won Kangana Ranaut-hosted Lock Upp. He was supposed to be a part of Rohit Shetty’s Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 but due to reasons he didn’t wish to reveal, the comedian was not able to participate on the show.
