The trailer of Sanya Malhotra's next Mrs is out, and it addresses the lives of most Indian women. In the role of Richa, she is a career-driven woman who is forced to become the 'perfect housewife' aka the one who serves the family and is never appreciated for her being. Mrs delves into the complexities that come with an Indian marriage, where a woman is expected to leave her household and is never enough in her new house, among the in-laws. Richa is one of the many examples out there. Here's exploring the trailer...
Richa worships dance. It is not just a hobby for her, but is her passion and she lives and breathes music. Further, it is established that Sanya Malhotra's Richa is simplistic who does not think much about her actions - case in point, revealing her wifi password just as her potential future husband asks for it (even the password is as simple).
Richa gets married into the very family. "Ab aap hamaari beti ho," is the last bait used to lure her into the life of home slavery, one that would make her forget she ever was passionate about her career. The first romance-filled honeymoon night later, reality strikes and Richa is kitchen-bound. She wishes to use modern technology to help finish the chores on time, but the family refuses time, thus leading to the first kalesh, as the mother-in-law is forced to go back into the kitchen. This causes chaos and the house is in panic over their newest slave 'not knowing how to keep the house clean.' Richa, once passionate about music, is now left listening to the pressure cooker whistle and feel her own tears as she grinds chutney also on mortar and pestel. Richa is indirectly called out for trying to taste food as well. After all her attempts, she is far from praised for putting in an effort into settling in a world where she's expected to be perfect without any help at hand. Richa's own mother refuses to listen to the daughter, by stating that these are basics that the daughter should learn to run the family.
As soon as the men reach home, they call out for Richa. All she is expected to do is serve them tea, snacks, food and the likes, depending on the time of the day. When her husband Diwakar, played by Nishant Dahiya, tries to find out Richa's passion, she talks about being a dancer. Prompt comes a reply, "Hobby ko job kaun banaata hai?," clearly understating her talents and refusing to accept Richa as a person. She then realizes that the family wouldn't even allow her to work. She is given the example of her mother-in-law, a Ph. D., who sacrificed her career to be 'the ideal family woman.' Diwakar warns that Richa will have to follow rules if she wants to live in the house. That happens to be the last nail in the coffin for Richa, since she is clearly unhappy with her current family setting. The trailer beautifully ends with Richa cleaning the window of an old cupboard - which can be interpreted as trying to get a new and fresh perspective on life after an introspection within the family (and society as a whole).
Also starring Kanwaljit Singh and Mrinal Kulkarni in pivotal roles, Mrs is a Zee5 original film that will be available for streaming from February 7. It can also be watched via OTTplay Premium.
