How much does a mother's opinion matter? The nail-biting drama Mother's Instinct raises precisely that topic. Inspiration for Anne Hathaway's character
The origin of Hathaway's character Celine is based on an actual story she heard about someone going into a "twilight state" to give birth, the actor explained when asked about the inspiration for her character. When she awoke, a hysterectomy had already removed her uterus. The actor apologised for her ignorance, stating that she gets irritated when she uses incorrect medical terminology. That seemed like a breach of trust for her when it happened. She continued to live her life as a famous woman after that incident. All Hathaway can think about is the fury that would lurk behind her seemingly perfect exterior if it were fundamental to her character. That would explain a significant portion of her motivation and the reasons she insisted on expressing her joy; in secret, she would be content.
Hathaway continued by saying that there's really more to the story than that. She believes that violence will persist as long as people live in a culture that does not value the autonomy of the body. They must not continue in this manner; they must not continue to regress. The actor understands that people's emotions are nuanced and that there is a wide range of beliefs, but she doesn't want to appear insensitive. However, they must also prioritise actions that benefit the most people in terms of participation, access to healthcare, and personal autonomy. Hathaway believes that this ensures everyone has the freedom to make their own decisions.
