It has been a lukewarm year for Tamil cinema. Given how extraordinarily Malayalam films performed in Tamil Nadu theatres, the industry still managed to give some box office successes through films like Maharaja, Lubber Pandhu, and Amaran. Now, let’s take a look at the expected Tamil OTT releases of December 2024, and the list includes Amaran, Kanguva and more.
Amaran is one of the blockbusters Tamil cinema witnessed this year. The film stars Sivakarthikeyan as the late Major Mukund Vardarajan, with Sai Pallavi playing his wife Indhu Rebecca Varghese. The film is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, explores the love story between Indhu and Mukund, while also detailing the latter’s life in Indian Army. Amaran is expected to premiere sometime in December on Netflix, mostly in the second or third week.
Kavin-starrer Bloody Beggar is a black comedy drama which is helmed by Sivabalan in his directorial debut. The film is backed by filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar under Filament Pictures. Bloody Beggar revolves around a lazy beggar who wanders into a palace out of excitement, and soon becomes the prey to the rich family living inside who wants to cover up certain crimes they committed. Bloody Beggar’s OTT details are yet to be announced officially.
Brother is directed by filmmaker Rajesh and stars Jayam Ravi in the lead role along with actors Priyanka Arul Mohan, Bhumika Chawla, VTV Ganesh, Natraj Subramanian, Rao Ramesh, Achyuth Kumar, Saranya Ponvannan, Seetha, Sathish Krishnan, MS Bhaskar, Suresh Chakravarthy, Vriddhi Visha, and Master Ashwin in prominent roles. The film is a family drama, focussing on the brother-sister bond. ZEE5 has bagged the rights of the film and is expected to premiere sometime in early December.
Kanguva is helmed by Siva and stars Suriya in dual roles. The film is set in the past and present and revolves around a warrior prince who saves a child, and the connection that lasts for generations, only to pass on to a bounty hunter in the present who gets strangely connected to a boy. Kanguva also stars Disha Patani, Bobby Deol and Karthi in a guest appearance. Prime Video has bagged the post-theatrical rights and will have a premiere in mid-December.
The release of Thangalaan has been much-awaited on OTT. The film is headlined by Vikram and is directed by Pa Ranjith. Thangalaan’s post-theatrical streaming rights are bagged by Netflix, and hopefully, the film should premiere by the year end. The period action drama also stars Parvathy Thiruvottu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy and others.
