While many deemed Mohanlal’s 1989 movie Dasaratham to be far ahead of its time, it is now widely regarded as one of the finest films of the superstar and ace director Sibi Malayil, who have collaborated in classics such as Kireedam, His Highness Abdullah, Sadayam and Bharatham. Now, 32 years since its release, the filmmaker has confirmed that the scripting of its sequel is complete.

Sibi is set for the release of his next film Kothth, which will mark his directorial comeback after seven years. The political thriller, starring Asif Ali, Roshan Mathew and Nikhila Vimal, is scripted by Hemanth Kumar.

In a recent interview with Manorama, the director said that he and Hemanth had first completed the script of the sequel of Dasaratham. The upcoming movie has been planned as a tribute to the late scriptwriter-director AK Lohithadas, who had written the 1989 movie, Sibi said.

The director also mentioned that Nedumudi Venu, who passed away last year, also had a pivotal role in the sequel. Venu, who played the role of a close friend of Mohanlal’s character Rajiv Menon in the film, was also thrilled after hearing the script of the sequel, the filmmaker disclosed. “His demise happened when the discussions were going on,” the director said.

Dasaratham revolves around a wealthy but aimless man named Rajiv Menon, who decides that he wants to have a child after spending time with his friend’s family. However, he doesn’t want to get married or adopt a child, but on the advice of another friend, he looks at surrogacy through artificial insemination as an option. Annie, who is desperate for money for her husband’s treatment, agrees to become the surrogate, but over time develops attachment for the baby. Rajiv, who changes his wayward ways in preparation to be a father, comes to terms with the new development, forms the plot of the acclaimed film.
