The hype for Mohanlal’s Monster reached another level last week when reports surfaced that the movie, directed by Vysakh and scripted by Udaykrishna, would be Malayalam’s first zombie film. This prompted the filmmaker to issue a clarification soon after.
In an earlier interview with us, the film’s scriptwriter Udaykrishna said that Monster, which is a thriller, will discuss a subject that filmmakers in the industry have been hesitant to tackle. Vysakh too had said the same during his interviews ahead of the release of Night Drive last week.
However, a few days ago, reports surfaced online that Monster is a zombie film – something that has not been made in Malayalam yet. Vysakh in a recent interview issued a clarification that such rumours are untrue. The filmmaker also said that reports about Monster’s OTT release being on April 8 too are false.
In an interview with OTTplay last week, the director, who had earlier worked with Mohanlal and Udaykrishna in Pulimurugan, said that Monster is a film that will work on both OTT and in theatres due to the strength of its content.
The filmmaker said that considering the pandemic situation, both he and Udaykrishna wanted to make a film that focused on the craft rather than coming up with another big-budget entertainer that has been their forte. “When we pitched the idea to Mohanlal and producer Antony Perumbavoor, they viewed it from the perspectives of artistes and considered the artform,” he said.
Vysakh also said that he has high hopes pinned on the movie, which presents a form of entertainment with every twist. Mohanlal had earlier told us that Monster is an investigative thriller which is packed with unexpected twists in the second half. Udaykrishna too said that it’s a film he’s written contemplating the possibilities to keep the audience guessing at every chance.
