Little did director Jeethu Joseph and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal know that their humble family-crime drama would continue to captivate audiences beyond the borders of Kerala and the Malayali diaspora when they made Drishyam. More than a decade later, the film continues to enchant audiences, not just in India but across the world.

Drishyam is all set to achieve the distinction of becoming the very first Malayalam movie to be remade in Hollywood. As per industry sources, India's Panorama Studios is roped in American production companies Gulfstream Pictures and JOAT Films to remake Drishyam in Hollywood.

Mohanlal's Drishyam breaks new ground

This is not the first international remake of Drishyam. The film has already been remade in Sinhala and Chinese and both the remakes were big hits in their respective countries. Drishyam made history by becoming the first Indian movie to be remade in China. The movie titled Sheep Without a Shepherd became a huge hit in mainland China in 2019 by grossing more than $200 million in theatrical collection. The film's remakes in Indonesian and Korean languages are also under development .

With a Hollywood remake on the cards, Drishyam is probably the first truly 'pan-world blockbuster' from India. Panorama Studios, which has acquired the international remake rights from the original producers Aashirvad Cinemas, has revealed its plans to remake Drishyam in as many as 10 other countries.

The new producers have described Drishyam as a "timeless thriller."

The enduring appeal of Drishyam

Drishyam is one of the most successful movie franchises in India. Following the massive critical and commercial success of the Malayalam original, the film inspired remakes in all major Indian languages. In Tamil it was remade as Papanasam (2015) starring Kamal Haasan, it was titled Dishya and Drushyam in Kannada and Telugu respectively. The film's Hindi remake carried the original title with Ajay Devgn playing the lead.

Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal reunited for Drishyam 2 in 2021 . The film was released directly on Amazon Prime Video owing to the pandemic situation in the country.
