Mohanlal fans not impressed with Chiranjeevi's GodFather: ‘You can’t Chiru gaaru’, ‘Please don't destroy Lucifer’

The teaser of the GodFather, which released online on July 4, also invited comparisons with the original film helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran

Within hours of the release of the teaser of Chiranjeevi’s GodFather, #Mohanlal began to trend on Twitter. The reason was obvious, the Telugu movie, helmed by Mohan Raja, is after all the remake of Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Lucifer. But the reaction from the Malayalam fans though was slightly unexpected with the hordes of Mohanlal fans comparing Chiranjeevi’s role to that essayed by the superstar in the Malayalam version.

While many outside Kerala lauded the teaser that had Chiranjeevi’s protagonist making his stylish entry in a car as opposed Mohanlal’s Stephen Nedumpally storming the legislative assembly on foot along with his massive following, the point of contention was that the Malayalam superstar’s performance had a bravado that was lacking in the Telugu megastar’s.

A few on Twitter said that it was impossible to replace Mohanlal and while anyone could make a remake, getting that masterful performance out of the lead actor as the superstar is near impossible. Some even went further to ask the makers of GodFather to not "destroy Lucifer".

Fans of the original, which marked Prithviraj's directorial debut, also brought up the planned sequel of the movie Empuraan, which is set to go on floors later this year. They said Prithviraj can now go back to focusing on his film rather than the marketing aspect as that would be taken care of by the makers of the Telugu film.

Though many agreed it's a bit harsh to judge a film or even Chiranjeevi's performance just based on the teaser, the video did showcase that the Telugu version will be vastly different from the Malayalam movie, which released in theatres in 2019.

Lucifer is Mohanlal's biggest hit till date, crossing Rs 100 crore. But that's less than the budget of Chiranjeevi's GodFather, which also has Salman Khan playing a pivotal role. It remains to be seen the impact the movie will have in the Telugu box office once it hits theatres later this year.
