Who would have thought we’d reach a point where we’d be discussing Tom Cruise’s possible final Mission: Impossible movie? Cruise has made the franchise legendary, repeatedly defying logic and physics by performing his own stunts, from clinging to planes mid-air to scaling skyscrapers. This week was even more thrilling for fans, as he revealed the official title for Mission: Impossible 8, but also hinted that it might be his last appearance as Ethan Hunt. Although this news was bittersweet, rumors quickly surfaced that Glen Powell might replace Cruise in the franchise’s future.
Glen Powell is currently one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. Rumored for roles in the DC Universe as Batman, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even as James Bond, Powell’s name is buzzing everywhere. However, with the new Mission: Impossible rumors swirling, Powell has come forward to address them, confirming that he will not be replacing Tom Cruise.
For context, Powell and Cruise developed a close friendship after working together on Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to Cruise’s iconic 1986 film. As rumors arose about Powell taking over Mission: Impossible, he shared that his mother would never approve, calling Cruise’s stunts a “death trap.”
According to Comicbook, Powell commented, “My mom would never let me do that. That’s the worst gig in town; everybody knows that. That’s a death trap.” So, for now, Powell is out of the running, and it remains unclear whether The Final Reckoning truly marks Cruise’s exit.
While many assumed the eighth installment would be called Dead Reckoning Part 2, Cruise surprised fans with the official title: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to release on May 23, 2025. Announcing it on Instagram, Cruise wrote, “Our lives are the sum of our choices. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. See you at the movies May 23, 2025.”
The trailer, which introduces The Final Reckoning, promises a thrilling addition to the franchise. With a responsibility to wrap up loose ends from Dead Reckoning, the trailer showcases heart-pounding action scenes and high-stakes drama, proving the team’s creative ambitions are higher than ever.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premieres worldwide on May 23, 2025. Fans can watch all seven Mission: Impossible films on JioCinema in India with an OTTplay Premium subscription. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates from the world of streaming and film.
