After Tovino Thomas’ Minnal Murali received largely positive reviews ahead of its Netflix release, the true litmus test was today when it dropped on the streaming platform for viewers worldwide. The movie, touted to be the first superhero film in Malayalam, has Tovino Thomas playing the lead character of a tailor-turned-superhero after being struck by lightning.
The Basil Joseph directorial already had a lot of expectations riding on it, but the team had been supremely confident of the film and that was evident during the interviews as well as their reactions after the world premiere at the Mumbai Film Festival last week.
With the movie now out on Netflix and the first set of viewers watching it since it premiered on the streamer at 1.30pm, Twitter has been flooded by the audience reactions. Many have compared the desi superhero movie to that of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and even DC’s The Flash and rated Minnal Murali higher due to its brilliant character development.
The fans were impressed by the performances of Tovino and Guru Somasundaram, who played the villain in the movie but got as much space and scope of performance as the protagonist.
While majority of the reactions were positive, some also pointed out areas where the movie could have improved. This included the length of the film, its pacing in certain areas and the VFX. But considering the limitations of Malayalam movies' budget, it's still a laudable feat.
The movie's grand response has also got people once again asking for a theatre release. The big budget film, which also has Baiju Santosh, Aju Varghese, Femina George, Jude Anthany Joseph, P Balachandran released directly on Netflix on December 24.
