Everything was working smoothly for the Scream franchise, now moving to Scream Vll or Scream 7, before a big controversial meteor struck it this week and tossed the world around it upside down. The name we have been reading for the past 24 hours is Melissa Barrera, who has now been fired from the franchise for voicing her support for Gaza and Palestine in bold social media posts. Here is everything that happened in this viral controversy.
What Happened Exactly?
The ground-zero situation in Gaza and Palestine and the war that is being fought have obviously become the most severe topic across the world. Israel is being advised to accept a ceasefire and stop the destruction, but there is no sight of this stopping even now. Scream star Melissa Barrera, in her social media post, called Palestine a colonised country and said the Israeli forces were actually carrying out genocide and ethnic cleansing. This created an uproar that led to the makers of the franchise firing her from Scream Vll.
What Did Melissa Barrera Say?
In the viral posts that she shared, Melissa Barrera did not mince her words and had a very strong opinion on the dark phase that we are witnessing. In one of her most viral Instagram stories, she wrote, “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water … People have learned nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.”
Scream 7 Production Company Spyglass’ Rep Said...
However, Spyglass, the production house that backs Scream 7, decided to go ahead without Melissa Barrera and fired her from her job. A representative for the company, as per IndieWire, said, “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
The director of Scream 7, Christopher Landon, in which Melissa Barrera plays Sam Carpenter, also reacted to the same, clarifying that he wasn’t involved in the firing in any capacity. Following her axing from the franchise and an uproar later, Landon, on his X (formerly called Twitter) account, in a now-deleted post, wrote, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
Melissa Barrera has yet to publicly speak about the firing. This new update has left the fans of the franchise either heartbroken or confused as to what exactly happened last night. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more on this and everything else in the realm of streaming and films.
