Mean Girls’ fans experienced a nostalgic trip down memory lane as their favorite iconic film, Mean Girls turned into a musical spin-off. Paramount Pictures unveiled their first trailer a few hours ago on November 8 (Wednesday), and fans are overwhelmed by the announcement.

The remake is not based on the 2004 comedy film of the same name, but it is rather adapted from the 2018 Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was also nominated for the Tony Awards due to its exceptional performance. However, what took fans by surprise was that the new movie trailer was kept devoid of any musical reference.

The fan-favorite characters are given a fresher look with a new cast. However, the 23-year-old pop singer, Renee Rapp will be reprising her Broadway Musical original role as the sarcastic Regina George in the Mean Girls. While Angourie Rice portrays the lead central character, Cady Heron, previously played by Lindsay Lohan. The Summer I Turned Pretty fame actor Christopher Briney plays Regina George’s boyfriend Aaron Samuels. Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey will be playing Janis and Damian.

Returning Cast

Actress, writer, and producer Tina Fey, the mastermind of the previous Mean Girls version, will be reprising her role as Mrs. Norbury in the upcoming movie. The talented star also starred in and wrote the original 2004 teen-comedy film. She is also credited for writing the stage musical. While Tim Meadows reprises his role as the funny Principal Duvall.

About the Mean Girls' trailer

Mean Girls' promising trailer starts with a fair warning, “This is not your mother's Mean Girls,” while Olivia Rodrigo's “Get Him Back! Plays in the backdrop. With the iconic R pendant, Renee Reps makes a grand entry as the mean leader of a trio of popular high school girls. The other highlights include the pink Burn Book, an angry fed-up high-school principal, a bunch of misfits who will team up with a new high school kid, Cady, and the innocent female lead who is all awkward with her first love and crush, who is also Regina’s boyfriend!

The 2:05 minute trailer also had some iconic dialogues from the original music like the “Get in, loser.”However, what caught the attention of the fans was the missing musical angle or was it a deliberate attempt?

Fans react

The new trailer took social media by storm as the trailer garnered over a million views in only a few hours and thousands of comments. Some users were inquisitive about why the trailer does not feature any aspect of the musical film and wrote, “I’m surprised the trailer doesn’t feature any aspect of this being a musical, since u know, that’s the main difference in this version.” While another wrote, “Kind of disappointed they didn’t showcase the musical part of this movie on the trailer.
